ANATOMY STUDY TIPS
Lots of students come to me saying we read but do not remember anatomy. My advice is to follow the Study/Reading Formula SQ3R.
What is formula SQ3R?
It is a Study/Reading formula designed to help in enhancing retention of information/study material. It has the following FIVE STEPS:
- S – Survey : Scan the topic from this site before attending the class. The purpose is to establish purpose and get the main ideas. It will take just 5-10 minutes. Look for:
- List of Contents or Learning Objectives given at the begining.
- Go through the headings, and look for important words in bold or italics .
- Go through the headings on applied aspects given at the end of page.
- Look at the diagrams .
- Q- Questions: After the class
- Prepare a list of questions on the topic. It gives purpose and improves concentration.
- The advantage this site has is that you get the information in the form of questions and answers so that you don’t miss any important information.
- R- Read: DO NOT read the text book like a novel/storybook.
- Search the answers of the question while reading the study material/textbook/website.
- Anatomy is a visual science. Look at the pictures and diagrams repeatedly. Always keep a good atlas with you or google the images..
- R- Revise: It helps to put the information into long term memory.
- Recollect what you have learnt.
- Practice drawing the simple digrams available on this site.
- Discuss the topic with colleagues/friends.
- R- Reflect: It solidifies the important concepts. You can do it on your own or share this with your colleague/friend.
- What was the most important/significant thing you learnt?
- What more you would like to learn?
- How this information will be useful clinically?
