Femoral triangle: It is a triangular depression located below the inguinal ligament in the upper 1/3rd of front of thigh.

Lateral boundary is formed by the medial border of sartorius.
Medial boundary is formed by the medial border of adductor longus.
Apex is present where sartorius overlaps adductor longus
Base is formed by inguinal ligament.

Boundaries of femoral triangle

Name the structures forming roof of femoral triangle .

  • Skin
  • Superficial fascia with superficial blood vessels and superficial inguinal lymph nodes.
  • Deep fascia (fascia lata)

Name the muscles forming floor of femoral triangle (lateral to medial)

  • Iliacus, Psoas major, Pectineus and Adductor longus

Muscles forming floor of femoral triangle

Enumerate the Contents of femoral triangle.

  • Arteries: Femoral artery and its branches
    • Superficial branchesof femoral artery: superficial epigastric, superficial circumflex iliac, superficial external pudendal
    • Deep branches of femoral artery: Deep external pudendal, Profunda femoris and its branches viz.lateral and medial circumflex femoral.
  • Veins: Femoral vein and its tributaries.
  • Nerves:
    • Femoral nerve and its branches
    • Lateral cutaneous nerve of thigh
    • Femoral branch of genitofemoral nerve
  • Lymph nodes: Deep inguinal lymph nodes
  • Fibrofatty tissue

Stab injury at the apex of femoral triangle

Structures lying at the apex of femoral triangle from before backwards are:

  • Femoral artery
  • Femoral Vein
  • Profunda femoris vein
  • Profunda femoris artery

A stab injury at the apex of femoral triangle may injure all the above structures.
